Colt Python | “Remembered and Reborn”

Colt, an American firearms company with over 180 years of history, known as the gun that “won the west.”  Makers of the legendary Colt 1911, Single Action Army, and “Snake guns” such as the Cobra, Anaconda, and Python.  The Python became known as one of Colt’s most prized revolvers, and a symbol of American craftsmanship and heritage.  Known for their exemplary fit and finish, Pythons were produced from the mid 1950s until the mid 1990s where production ceased.  Becoming much sought-after collectors items, used Pythons in good condition could regularly net 3-4x their original worth, building an immense demand for their return.  in 2020, Colt would re-introduce the Python after over 2 decades in hiatus.

Conceptualize / Pre-production

Copy write all voiceover script, storyboard message and premise of ad, source voiceover talent via auditions.

Source / Scout / Arrange Locations

Work with several connections to secure facilities outside of the Colt factory to shoot feature content, as well as pre-scouting Colt’s building before initial filming.

Source Participants / Firearms

Put a call out to our network of industry friends/contacts for participants in the features, as well as arrange delivery of firearms to a familiar FFL in our network.

All field production

Multiple days in several locations, both indoor and outdoor, shot with a RED camera package w/ support from a Movi Pro unit and various set lighting depending on environment.

All post production

Edit/deliver main 2 minute brand anthem video, augmented by a separate 30 second television ad based on the Python, complete with still photography for the purpose of print advertising.

THE CHALLENGE

Develop an overall brand message, feel, and video, for a well-established brand with over 180 years of history in a medium they are not well-established in (video advertising) with a highly anticipated unreleased product that had to remain secret and unseen throughout production. Planning, direction, pre-production, field production, and post production was left to us.

THE SOLUTION

Scripted the voiceover copy to drive direction of the ad and message, along with story boarding a shot list matching a theme agreed upon by the client. After conceptualizing the basis of the ad, we arranged several shoot locations using personal connections, beginning with a local gunsmith shop acting as both FFL and shoot location, including additional local areas where firearms could be fired and filmed for production. Gathered individual participants via our network, complete with talent releases, to appear in content shot across multiple locations. After the completion of field production, we crafted (1) 30 second television ad, and (1) 2 minute overall brand anthem video for the web communicating the brand's heritage and message. Additionally, commercial photography was provided by us for the accompanying print ad campaign for the Python's release.
